The first independent credit card in the world has been credited to an ill-fated meal at the Majors Cabin Grill restaurant in 1949. Frank McNamara, head of the Hamilton Credit Corporation was dining with department store magnate Alfred Bloomingdale and his attorney Ralph Sneider.

After a conversation about a customer who had borrowed money to pay back debts he had accrued to department stores by allowing neighbours to borrow money from him, Mr McNamara went to pay for his meal only to find that he had forgotten his wallet, requiring him to call his wife to bring some cash to the restaurant.

Vowing never to have this happen again, he developed a credit card concept that could be used at multiple locations with the card handler acting as a middleman between customers and companies.

This led to the development of the Diners Club, the first-ever credit card that distributed UK cards in 1962, a year before the first American Express card in the UK and four years before the first major British credit card company, Barclaycard, developed a monopoly from 1966 until 1972.

Amazon, as well as Sweetgreen and other retailers who had gone till-less, assumed that people were ready to accept a wholly cashless shopping experience, but far more people than they expected were reliant on cash.

A lot of people who use cash do not have a bank account and often have a lower income than the national average, and a shop that inherently does not accept cash was increasingly seen as discriminatory, as well as off-putting for people who wanted to use a regular till.

This incident happened nearly four years before the implementation last October of Natasha’s Law , named after a teenager who had died of anaphylactc shock on board a plane after eating a baguette that had not had the presence of sesame seeds disclosed on its packaging. Now, any product listed as pre-packaged for direct sale must have allergen details on its labels.

The man credited with the invention was E.A. Johnson at the Royal Radar Establishment in Malvern, Worcestershire, round 1965. Nobody was thinking of shopping tills at the time; this system was devised for potential use in air traffic control systems.

It was in the 1970s that the technology started to become more widely used. In 1973, Dr Sam Hurst from the University of Kentucky invented what he called the Elograph, which the university patented. It was seen as a major step forward in the technology, but did not feature a transparent screen. However, Dr Hurst and his team reduced their first transparent touch screen in 1974.

The actual term ‘touch screen’ was first used three years later, when Siemens funded a venture by Elographics, the company founded by Dr Hurst and the university, to create the first curved screen device.

From here, it was just a matter of time before these screens would be used in a growing number of places. The first mobile phone with one was actually created in the 1980s, an age when those old enough to remember will recall most mobiles were like bricks.

As with so many features of modern technology, there is a generation now emerging that has never known anything else. Older consumers will recall a different time, but few may have realised just how long ago touch screens were actually first in use.

This allowed “Gene” Mosher to develop a widget-based interface system that would allow for menu items to be easily added and removed without requiring any programming skill.

Its asking price of $1000 was far too much for a games console during a time when even the most expensive system was $700 and most were closer to $200, but that made it a very affordable price for an interactive kiosk, especially during a time before OPOS had standardised the market.

According to the latest British Retail Cons ortium (BRC) Sensormatic IQ data, UK footfall dropped by 10.5 per cent in June. However, this is two percentage points higher than the previous month, and an improvement from the quarterly decline of 11.8 per cent.

This figure is also better than the statistics from Germany, Italy and France for last month, when footfall declined by 19.4 per cent, 21.6 per cent and 23.5 per cent respectively.

Chief executive of the BRC Helen Dickinson noted that the rise in visits to shops is down to customers shopping around for the best deal.

“This was boosted by the Jubilee celebrations and summer heatwave, which more than compensated for the impact of the rail strikes on city centre footfall,” she stated.

While it is encouraging for retailers that footfall decline is improving, this has not necessarily translated into a rise in sales.

Andy Sumpter, retail consultant for EMEA for Sensormatic Solutions, said June was a “rollercoaster ride for the high street”, thanks to the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee being offset by the rail strikes.

He echoed concerns regarding the cost-of-living crisis having a negative impact on sales this autumn. However, the expert hoped that even though consumers might shop less often, they will think about their purchases more carefully, which will drive up conversion rates.

Retail Connections recently advised shop owners to “act swiftly and decisively” to ensure they are prepared to deal with an upcoming “retail revolution”. It was suggested they should demonstrate values, adopt personalisation, and use social media to capitalise on the new ‘discovery commerce’ trend.
