Why EPOS Systems Are Essential This Christmas

There is no denying that Christmas is the busiest time of the year for retailers, with people flocking to the shops to stock up on food, gift wrapping, presents and decorations in the weeks leading up to December 25th. Therefore, it is vital you have a good-quality

           EPOS system

to deal with the increase in demand in your retail stores.

           Monitor stock

Running out of popular stock is one thing you will not want to happen over the next few weeks, so having software that monitors stock shortage comes in handy.

The Samtouch Office enables users to see if there are gaps, what the most popular products are, and offers different price levels for each item, so staff can easily flick between promotions.

Analyse promotions

Equally, EPOS systems provide excellent analysis tools, enabling retailers to closely monitor promotional campaigns and alter them for the maximum profit. For instance, by informing what products are flying off the shelf, this gives managers key information about what to drop in price or what to increase.

           Remote sales

The Christmas shopping period will see salesclerks run off their feet, so make their life easier by enabling remote sales. This function is already used a lot by hospitality staff, enabling them to charge customers at their table. However, it can also be utilised by retailers if there are long queues and more cashiers need to be opened up. This streamlines the sales process, encouraging more people to buy.

This will be particularly useful in the coming weeks, as

has predicted £82.2 billion will be spent in retail during the Christmas period.

Telltale Signs You Need A New EPOS System

Because of the generally robust nature of a lot of

           EPOS tills

, the general reasons for replacing an older, obsolete system with a new one vary more considerably than with other IT systems.

Most computer systems in business tend to be upgraded roughly every five years, whilst an EPOS system can potentially run for over a decade depending on how it is maintained, taken care of and the nature of the business it is connected to.

However, as with any other piece of business equipment, an EPOS system will eventually need to be replaced, and here are some telltale signs it may need to be replaced sooner rather than later.

           It Gets Very Slow

An EPOS system of any type should make your customer service easier, more streamlined and better for the customer. If it is started to become noticeably slow or is beginning to impact your business's ability to provide outstanding customer service.

A slow EPOS system can delay inventory management searches, cause issues with card payments and deal with other issues which can cost you money and reputation. It may be time to consider a new system.

It Is Getting More Expensive To Service

Older hardware, once it reaches the end of its initial support period, starts to get more difficult to repair or replace, requiring a lot more involved searching on the part of service engineers to find other used parts.

This can start to reflect in the cost of maintenance and repairs, and eventually can reach a tipping point where the cost of replacing the system entirely is less than the cost to continue servicing and repairing the old tills and card readers.

           Technology Marches On

           The widespread adoption of

           Chip-And-PIN

in the mid-2000s forced a lot of SMEs to quickly upgrade their EPOS systems to transition from magnetic swipe cards (sometimes known as Chip-And-Signature) to the machines we are familiar with today.

A similar story happened with the transition to contactless cards and later mobile payment systems such as Apple Pay. It is not clear what the future holds for payments, but it pays to be ready to make the switch.

What Was The First Credit Card In The UK?

Many of the most important advances in

           EPOS till systems

were initially spearheaded by the rapid rise and eventual ubiquity of a new type of payment that necessitated an advanced, digital approach to managing money.

The concept of credit had been implemented on the local level for centuries before the credit card was formalised, with many stores allowing customers to buy stuff on store credit and pay for it later.

Eventually, these systems would start to get formalised in the form of “charge coins” and the

, which were in practice store credit systems but replaced the arduous filling out of sales slips with a coin that could be stamped onto the slip.

This, in turn, led to the

           Air Travel Card

, the world’s internationally valid charge card, albeit one that could only be used to buy plane tickets, which led the way for a wave of experiments before an event that has since been described in financial circles as “The First Supper”.

The first independent credit card in the world has been credited to an ill-fated meal at the Majors Cabin Grill restaurant in 1949. Frank McNamara, head of the Hamilton Credit Corporation was dining with department store magnate Alfred Bloomingdale and his attorney Ralph Sneider.

After a conversation about a customer who had borrowed money to pay back debts he had accrued to department stores by allowing neighbours to borrow money from him, Mr McNamara went to pay for his meal only to find that he had forgotten his wallet, requiring him to call his wife to bring some cash to the restaurant.

Vowing never to have this happen again, he developed a credit card concept that could be used at multiple locations with the card handler acting as a middleman between customers and companies.

This led to the development of the Diners Club, the first-ever credit card that distributed UK cards in 1962, a year before the first American Express card in the UK and four years before the first major British credit card company, Barclaycard, developed a monopoly from 1966 until 1972.

has been one of increasing the convenience and ease of the shopping experience for both customers and members of staff alike.

From early mechanical tills and complex warehousing systems powered by supercomputers, electronic point-of-sale systems have evolved to more modern checkouts and self-checkout systems, which have become increasingly affordable for even smaller businesses over the years.

However, some retailers attempted to go even further by creating stores that completely removed checkouts entirely and instead uses a combination of complex sensors, scanners and online accounts to keep track of purchases and pay before they leave.

The first in the UK was

           Sainsbury’s Holborn Circus Local

store, powered using a “Pay & Go” app, but the most famous and most ambitious was Amazon Go, which scanned an app at the start of a customer’s shop and kept track of them throughout their trip.

Anything they picked up would be added to a virtual cart and anything removed would be subtracted from it, and tracked using an elaborate combination of cameras and weight scales.

Once a customer was finished, the shopping would be automatically charged without the need for a checkout.

Initially, the concept generated a lot of curiosity, and it was praised as potentially the future of retail, were it not for a major fundamental misunderstanding of retail.

Amazon, as well as Sweetgreen and other retailers who had gone till-less, assumed that people were ready to accept a wholly cashless shopping experience, but far more people than they expected were reliant on cash.

A lot of people who use cash do not have a bank account and often have a lower income than the national average, and a shop that inherently does not accept cash was increasingly seen as discriminatory, as well as off-putting for people who wanted to use a regular till.

Eventually, legislation began to be enacted that would require all retailers to accept cash, which led to Amazon Go having dedicated cash tills and other “till-less” stores following suit.

Are you tightening your belt like the rest of us? Wanting to keep your cash in the bank? One of the many benefits of buying from us is that we offer finance on all items over £500 -meaning you can spread the cost of your purchase into affordable monthly payments.

It’s a popular way for businesses to get the equipment they need, without having to find the working capital upfront. And, with our finance partner, it’s quick, simple and hassle free - with finance often being secured in 24hrs.

           The benefits of buying on finance (or leasing, as it’s commonly known) include;

            · Save on tax. You can claim tax back on 100% of your lease payments, making it the clever (and often most cost effective) way to buy

           · Fixed interest rates, meaning you can budget for the years ahead

           · Keep your cash in the bank

            · It’s yours to keep at the end. One transfer of title payment at the end of your lease means it’s all yours

Why Touchscreen Is The Future

           Why Touchscreen Is The Future

Most big stores will have touchscreen tills and up-to-date EPOS systems in place these days and there's a reason why. Touchscreen is the way forward in providing more efficient service with ease and quickness and you should perhaps consider making the change yourself.

If you are still running on outdated manual till systems, you may want to look into replacing this with a touchscreen system. This can drastically improve the experience you have when dealing with transactions.

Touchscreen provides a quicker option than manual tills. Time can be saved as you do not have to key in everything by hand and can instead access all the information and menus you need with one simple tap. This means you can achieve a higher transaction turnover, so you will turn a higher profit.

You can also more easily manage your business from a touchscreen system. This gives you more options when looking at employee management and productivity.

This can increase work efficiency as there is less room for error and allows mistakes to be found and corrected more easily, so your workers can learn from errors and amend them.

Touchscreen till systems

can also make your workplace more accessible

as people who struggle to use manual till systems may have an easier time with touchscreen. There is more customisability and you can change the size of the screen, buttons and text to fit your needs.

Having a touchscreen system also gives you the option of opening

tills, so customers are able to make the choice between visiting a cashier or purchasing their items by themselves. This gives the customer more freedom and can also free up staff to help in other areas of your business.

Touchscreen provides a modern solution for businesses looking for new and efficient ways to run. Making the change can benefit both you and your business and help you profit more, increase customer and employee satisfaction and provide better service overall.

Allergy Death A Reminder Of Importance Of Food Labelling

Deaths from food allergies in the UK have fallen in recent years, but, tragically they still happen and many consumers are at risk, making it vital that shops have the software in their till systems to spot when goods contain ingredients that could cause a severe reaction.

, revealed mother of five Celia Marsh had died after eating a vegetarian flatbread product at a Pret a Manger outlet in Bath in December 2017.

Ms Marsh had an acute dairy allergy and the product included a dressing made with coconut yoghurt that, while labelled dairy-free, had traces of milk in it. Although the manufacturer had flagged up the risk of cross-contamination, this information had not been passed on to customers. This may lead to calls for a further tightening of food safety and labelling laws.

The History Of Touch Screen Technology

           touch screen till systems

may seem like a relatively novel innovation. While people will be familiar with them in stores of various sizes these days, only millennials and generation Z consumers will not recall a time when they were nowhere to be seen and everyone queued at the till.

The same may be said of all sorts of other uses of touch screens, from cashpoints to ticket machines, not to mention mobile phones.

Few might imagine that this technology actually dates back

           as far as the 1960s

, at a time when the computers used by NASA to guide its Apollo lunar missions had less computing power than one of today’s smartphones.

The man credited with the invention was

           E.A. Johnson

at the Royal Radar Establishment in Malvern, Worcestershire, round 1965. Nobody was thinking of shopping tills at the time; this system was devised for potential use in air traffic control systems.

It was in the 1970s that the technology started to become more widely used. In 1973, Dr Sam Hurst from the University of Kentucky invented what he called the Elograph, which the university patented. It was seen as a major step forward in the technology, but did not feature a transparent screen. However, Dr Hurst and his team reduced their first transparent touch screen in 1974.

The actual term ‘touch screen’ was first used three years later, when Siemens funded a venture by Elographics, the company founded by Dr Hurst and the university, to create the first curved screen device.

From here, it was just a matter of time before these screens would be used in a growing number of places. The first mobile phone with one was actually created in the 1980s, an age when those old enough to remember will recall most mobiles were like bricks.

As with so many features of modern technology, there is a generation now emerging that has never known anything else. Older consumers will recall a different time, but few may have realised just how long ago touch screens were actually first in use.

What Was The First Touch Screen EPOS System?

In almost every retail establishment, touch screen till systems are

the standard way of processing orders

and have become so intuitive and easy to use that customers are able to scan and pack their own shopping using these systems.

This was not always the case, however, especially before computers were a standard part of billions of people’s lives.

Electronic point-of-service terminals were initially exceptionally complex, often requiring a button for every single product or service rendered, which meant that the whole system had to be altered if an item was added or removed.

This was a problem McDonalds Restaurants faced in 1974 with their early, bespoke EPOS system; once the menu started to rapidly expand the system would need to be constantly adjusted to fit.

By 1986, however, this began to change thanks to the work of

           Eugene Mosher

. In 1978, he began to develop early, bespoke POS software for one of the hospitality businesses he was running, but in 1986 had his biggest breakthrough when he developed ViewTouch, the first touchscreen EPOS system.

What made it possible were two major technological innovations; the first was the development of early light pens and resistive touch-screen interfaces that were affordable for most small businesses.

The other development was the release of the

           Atari 520ST computer

, which was at the time one of the most affordable computers available with a graphical user interface as standard and thus easy compatibility with mice, light pens and touch screen overlays.

This allowed “Gene” Mosher to develop a widget-based interface system that would allow for menu items to be easily added and removed without requiring any programming skill.

It was showcased in Autumn 1986 at Comdex as part of Jack Tramiel’s Atari Computer booth highlighting the computer’s potential for businesses and it would find a successful niche in the hospitality industry for many years.

The CD-i originally started development in 1984, just two years after Philips and Sony had developed the compact disc together. The intention was to create a standard for what would eventually become known as multimedia, much in the same way the Red Book standard was used for music.

It was intended to be an interactive home entertainment system that could play music, video CDs and a variety of educational and entertainment software, but quickly was forced to sell itself as a video game console to try and sell the hugely expensive system.

This did not work because outside of its ability to play video during a time when that was not a standard feature, the CD-i was quite underpowered for a games console, and its library of games included some truly bizarre adaptations of game shows and four infamous games featuring Nintendo characters.

Despite this relative lack of success, the CD-i was produced for eight years, in part because it had found a niche as a highly effective point-of-sale system, as well as an interactive kiosk that could be used to play videos and music in electronics stores.

Its asking price of $1000 was far too much for a games console during a time when even the most expensive system was $700 and most were closer to $200, but that made it a very affordable price for an interactive kiosk, especially during a time before OPOS had standardised the market.

Retailers that are considering updating their till systems will face a lot of choice when picking the latest technology for their business.

Read on to find out everything you need to know about modern electric point of sale (EPOS) machines, so you can find one that suits your needs best.

           EPOS systems

are not a new notion, as they have been around since the 1980s. However, it is safe to say they have advanced considerably since the first model as a simple electronic cash register.

Instead of just ringing up sales, EPOS technology enables retailers to adjust the pricing, order new stock when supplies are running low, split bills, and manage inventory.

They make a huge contribution to the general organisation of the store, allowing it to be far more efficient and streamlined. For instance, it can tally information with the e-commerce site and warehouse data, as well as what is on the shelves in the actual shop.

Restaurants and cafes find them incredibly useful, as they instruct the kitchen, include allergen information, and have updated menu changes or customer specifications.

They can also incorporate promotions; include different prices for certain goods, such as if they are on offer; and take account of customer loyalty cards or membership discounts.

A reason why they are popular among managers is it takes just 20 minutes to train staff how to use them, while features such as fast tendering, remote ordering and multiple terminals mean the running of the restaurant, shop or café can be far more efficient and organised.

The Importance of Weighing Scale Calibration

Why it is important to maintain Scale Calibration

For many industries, a reliable and accurate industrial scale is at the heart of everyday operations. From weighing large pallets in a shipyard to counting nuts and bolts in a factory, for packing fruit and vegetables to weighing meat and other goods, potential uses for industrial weighing scales vary widely and offer a variety of benefits. Because of their importance, you really need to look after your devices and provide a regular scale care routine to ensure optimal performance. One of the most fundamental ways to do this is to calibrate your industrial weighing scales to ensure a high accuracy.

Why do you need to calibrate a scale?

Scale calibration is essential to providing accurate weighing. results with every use. Working with an industrial scale that has not been correctly calibrated is ill-advised and can cost time and money, as well as potentially impacting your business’ reputation. Reduced quality of your goods or product recalls are just two potentially harmful results that can stem from having non-calibrated weighing equipment.

Over time your scale will lose accuracy – it happens! General day-to-day use combined with inevitable mishaps such as spillages or knocks eventually take their toll. Luckily, setting up a calibration schedule for your scales and balances will increase their longevity and ensure that they remain accurate for longer.

           Benefits of calibration

Having correctly calibrated industrial scales ensures that your equipment is ready to go and accurate at all times. Here are eight reasons why calibration is so crucial:

            Accuracy

             - Sustaining a high level of accuracy for all weight measurements. Obvious, but completely fundamental for all industries that rely on weighing equipment. This could be anything from accurate parts counting to recipe-based industries such as food production or industrial mixing processes.

            Avoiding legal issues

             - Potential legal issues could arise from incorrectly weighed produce, including anything from customer complaints all the way to fines or even legal action. Many different legal processes must be adhered to, such as using trade approved scales when selling a product based on its weight, or complying with shipping regulations.

            Customer confidence

             - It is obviously essential that your customers know exactly what to expect and having a calibrated industrial scale or balance helps guarantee that you maintain a strong level of customer confidence.

            Save money

             - The correct calibration of a balance or scale for industrial use helps to avoid potential issues that could cost money, such as product recalls or wastage. It may also help bypass any shipping and transit issues that could occur as a result of a box or pallet being incorrectly weighed.

            Keep track of aging equipment

             - Identify any signs of deteriorating equipment. Keeping a regular calibration routine for your scales or balances allows you to spot any signs that they are aging. You are then able to make an informed decision to either repair or replace your instrument.

            Compatibility and uniformity

             - If you use more than one industrial weighing scale or balance, you will want them to provide the exact same results to avoid inaccurate data and confusion.

            Safety

             – Your products or produce must remain safe to use for customers. It’s as simple as that. For food production, it could be putting too much salt into a mixture as a result of poorly calibrated scales and breaches food safety guidelines. In industrial mixing such as concrete production, too much or too little of an ingredient could cause the solution to be overly brittle or soft. Safety is an issue that may come in a number of different forms depending on your industry, so you should be up to date with relevant health and safety regulations.

            Save time

             - Time is always of the essence for any business, so it’s crucial that your industrial scales are ready to go and accurate. If they are not, you risk product recalls or having your produce reweighed whilst in transit.

How often should weighing scales be calibrated?

Generally it depends on the use of the scales, the environment, the frequency of use and the if the scales are moved around, but for the British Retail Consortium (BRC) and Trading Standards it is recommended that scales are calibrated annually, with a calibration certificate issued, detailing the date of the calibration, the results and any action required to rectify any issues. It is also recommended that the scale calibration is checked and recorded before use, so for a food preparation or packaging facility it would be a daily procedure. If the scales are moved from place to place or are in a harsh environment, it is best practice to check the calibration after moving the device. For laboratory balances, with high accuracy, it is always best practice to check on a regular basis, as things like temperature changes, moisture or even a breeze can affect the calibration of the device.

Having the right POS (point of sale) system is important for any retail business, as it helps manage and process customer transactions effectively. Traditionally, mechanical cash registers have been the system of choice, but touchscreen has been increasing in popularity in recent years for a variety of reasons.

While it may seem pointless to fix something that isn’t necessarily broken, bringing your company's technology up to speed with modern advances is sure to benefit you and your customers by making their transactional interactions easier and smoother.

, with touchscreen process transactions 20 per cent faster than mechanical tills, meaning there is the potential for 20 per cent more profit to be made in a day's work.

Touchscreen POS systems also have the added benefit of employee management. With time tracking, IPM (items per minute) tracking and information on which employees were signed in and when, touchscreen systems can help you better manage your team and address any issues with productivity and speed.

There is also added reliability with touchscreen tills. There are fewer components that can fail, meaning tills are less prone to breaking. With no physical buttons to fall off or become stuck and easier cleaning and maintenance, touchscreen is great for those looking for a more reliable option.

. Using a touchable screen may be an easier option for those with limited mobility in their hands, as well as the screen being customisable in terms of font size and sensitivity.

This also allows for additional devices such as styluses to be used for added assistance for those less able to use the technology.

With all these benefits, it isn’t hard to see why so many are making the switch from mechanical to touchscreen. It is more simple, more effective and requires less maintenance overall.

Customer Pat McCarthy started the petition in question, writing: “What used to be a great shopping experience has now become physically difficult, overwhelming, and a nightmare.

“At my local Tesco mega-store and probably all over the country, Tesco is bringing in new self-service and sort-it-out-yourself card only till machines.”

Of course, the idea behind self-service tills is to facilitate the shopping experience and make it quicker and easier for people to buy what they need efficiently. But if the tills themselves make the job harder, it’s likely that you’ll start to lose customers or, as in this Tesco case, start seeing some serious complaints.

Having a good mix of self-service and staffed tills is perhaps the wisest way of working, so that people can choose which they’d rather use.

The balance between the two is likely to be influenced by your target market and brands with younger audiences may want to have more self-service and automated options in store, while those targeting older demographics may prefer to stick to more traditional till options.

It’s becoming increasingly important for consumer-facing businesses to really prioritise the shopping experience and customers are now looking for a lot more from the brands they choose to shop with… so make sure that all your systems, digital and traditional alike, are fully functional at all times to keep the customers satisfied.
